Monday May 1, 2017 Wednesday May 31, 2017

Reception: May 7th 2:00 – 4:00 PM
Artist's Talk at 3:00 PM

For the month of May, the Library will exhibit Opposites Attract, an exhibition pairing Paula Madawick’s realistic and abstract artworks through color, form and composition.

Paula Madawick describes herself as

“… a third generation artist. My formative years were spent in Rockland County in an avant-garde household with cultural forces such as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and John Cage. Their presences strongly influence me.

At 17 I moved to New York City, attended then quit the School of Visual Arts, and became artist’s assistant to Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. I also continued my art education through life experiences such as tending bar at Andy Warhol’s parties in the Factory.

These early influences gave me the freedom to think and pursue art without conventional constraints. I work abstractly, figuratively, realistically, with colored pencils, crayons, graphite, oil paint, paper, and stone. I was once in three group shows simultaneously, at three different area art centers; most people had no idea I was represented in all three. I like exploring and seeking new art problems to be solved.

So, I have developed a style that challenges me; I keep my subject choice unusual, the medium varying widely and my craftsmanship to the highest standards. Vivian Raynor of The New York Times reviewed my work and said, “Her choice of style smacks of a rebellion against rebellion.” ”
