5-Minute Flicks: Teen Film Festival

Friday Jun 1, 2018, 7 p.m.

At 7 pm on Friday, June 1st, 2018, for the first time, the Dennis P. McHugh Piermont Public Library will partner with the Michael J. Armstrong Memorial Foundation to host "Five-Minute Flicks," a new competition in collaboration with the film program at South Orangetown's Tappan Zee High School.

The competition, which will award three cash prizes, provides an opportunity to remember the life of 9/11 victim Michael J. Armstrong while celebrating the creative talents of local teenagers. Film was one of many passions held by Armstrong, a 34-year-old bond trader at Cantor Fitzgerald on September 11, 2001. The Foundation established in his name seeks to commemorate a $10,000 mark of giving to the library and forge a commitment to making the film competition an annual event in memory of Armstrong, who was an avid believer that the passions of young people should be explored and nurtured through education and opportunity. The Dennis P. McHugh Piermont Public Library, named after 9/11 Firefighter Dennis P. McHugh, will be utilizing a $20,000 anonymous donation of state-of-the-art projector equipment and blackout shades, making the library the ideal fit and setting for the venture for a combination of reasons.

The challenge for entrants will be to tell a compelling story of fiction, in any theme or genre of their choosing, in five minutes or less. Prizes will be awarded for First Place ($500), Second Place ($300), and Third Place ($200) at the end of the evening. It is the hope of the Foundation that the prize money will be spent to further enhance the students' love of film.

Leigh LaBrake, who teaches TV Production and Broadcasting at Tappan Zee High School, commented on the importance of showcasing the work of students to the greater Orangetown community. "I cannot wait to see the students' reactions when they attend the festival and get to see their films on the big screen," said LaBrake. "To be able to share and view their films in a setting outside of school is such a great experience. Their work will not only be enjoyed but appreciated and that is something huge to students."

Doors will open for this event at 6:30 p.m. The viewing of entries will begin at approximately 7 p.m., and admission is free. Film buffs of all ages, come one, come all!
