Exhibit - Working at Gair: Photographs of Workers at the Robert Gair Plant in 1949.

Tuesday Aug 3, 2010 Monday Aug 30, 2010

Gair worker

Molder Frank Filliger carefully ladling hot lead on copper shell to make rigid backing for printing plate.

For many years, the Robert Gair plant in Piermont (located on the present site of the library and Piermont Landing development) was the biggest employer for miles around, with as many as 1,300 people working at one point. A process invented in 1879 by the company's founder Robert Gair revolutionized the paper box industry, and his Piermont plant made boxes for well known products such as New Blue Cheer, Tide, and Wheaties. In this exhibit you can see prints of some professional photographs of Gair workers doing the wide variety of jobs that led to a finished box. The photographs were originally published in the October/November 1949 issue of the Gair house organ, Gair News.

Please see the History section for additional photos and information about Piermont's rich history.

Blue Velvet presented by First Friday Film Series

Friday Aug 6, 2010 7:30 p.m.

Film strip

Monthly: 1st Friday of every month

Free and open to public.

August: The First Friday Film Series will present David Lynch's 1986 masterpiece Blue Velvet–one of the most disturbing, yet most heralded, films ever made. Brilliant, visceral and at times psychologically terrifying–an effect that few directors other than Hitchcock could achieve–Blue Velvet explores the unspeakable darkness that lives beneath ordinary life in an ordinary small American town. It's a surrealistic, creepy, funny, frequently shocking trip to the underworld that, as strange as it seems, also appears strangely familiar. Thus, Blue Velvet is a beautiful dream and a nightmare all in one–in other words, unforgettable.

The film stars Kyle MacLachlan, Isabella Rossellini (who nearly lost her modeling contract with LancĂ´me over this role), Dennis Hopper, Laura Dern and Dean Stockwell. (The recently departed Hopper turned in the performance of his life as Frank Booth, an almost unfathomably monstrous screen villain who is also unfailingly entertaining to watch.) Parental discretion is advised.

About the Film Series

First Friday Film Series: On the 1st Friday of every month, series producer Marc Farre shows a free film at the Piermont Library–sometimes featuring a special guest–and hosts a short discussion afterward. If you'd like to be notified of upcoming movies, just send an email to: piermontfilms@gmail.com.
