Exhibit - RIVERSCAPES by Gosha Karpowicz

Tuesday May 1, 2012 Wednesday May 30, 2012

Gosha Karpowicz

Painting by Gosha Karpowicz.

Gosha Karpowicz grew up around the beautiful farmlands of Poland. Later she moved to the U.S. and studied at the Parsons School of Design, graduating with a degree in Fine Arts. She taught painting at Waldorf Schools for many years, while developing her own art and deepening her studies of the healing and therapeutic aspects of painting. In her work she explores the “curious, stunning, unanswered, breathtaking, meaningful, beautiful.”

For this exhibit she has created a series of oil paintings inspired by our stunning, breathtaking and beautiful Hudson River!

Reception; Gosha will host a reception for the show on Sunday, May 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. Please plan to join us to meet the artist and share some refreshments. All are welcome.

Concert: KLEINE MUSIK at the Library

Sunday May 20, 2012, 4 p.m.

Kleine Musik

Kleine Musik ensemble

The second performance in our new series In Different Voices. The concert is free and open to all.

KLEINE MUSIK interweaves selections from the Kleine Geistliche Konzerte, a vocal and instrumental collection by the 17th century German master, Heinrich Schütz, with new settings of the same texts by the wonderful contemporary British composer Ivan Moody. With Moody’s blessing it has been reworked and shaped to fit an ensemble of two sopranos, two recorders/baroque flute, viola da gamba, and theorbo by former Piermont resident Johanna Maria Rose and soprano Karol Steadman, and had its US debut in February in New York City. Schütz’s music is highly Italianate and florid, making a wonderful foil for Moody’s more dissonant, almost trance-like settings, which use some of Schütz’s gestures, but are also influenced by the eastern sound of orthodox sacred music. Don’t miss the Rockland County debut of this unique work at the Piermont Library!

"Tail Waggin' Tutors" Children Reading to Dogs

Thursday May 31, 2012, 4:30 p.m. 6 p.m.

Registration is required. Please call in advance to schedule your child's 15-minute reading session.

Tail Waggin’ Tutors is a reading program developed by Therapy Dogs International for children who are reluctant to read aloud. The main objective of this program is to provide a relaxed atmosphere, which allows students who are self-conscious in a classroom environment to practice the skill of reading.

By sitting down next to a dog and reading to the dog, all threats of being judged are put aside. The child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading.

Reading improves because the child is practicing the skill of reading, building self-esteem, and associating reading with something pleasant.

Print out the TailWagging Tutors poster (PDF).
