Presented by the Master Gardeners of the Rockland County Cornell Cooperative Extension, this STEAM-oriented, multi-faceted, educational, and fun-packed hour program is geared for children entering Grades 1-4. Children will be introduced to seven exotic, strange, and colorful rainy jungle birds after they have brainstormed what is necessary for any winged creatures to adapt to their environments. Tropical birdwatcher Karen will next take the children on a magical virtual journey where they will learn the legend of a tiny hummingbird who becomes King of Guatemala. The program concludes with a fast moving, interactive game of Jungle Jumble where pairs of children try to reconstruct these exotic birds from puzzle pieces and match them with their correct bird songs. All program participants will receive goody bags of jungle-themed information and pencil/paper activities.

August Library Fundraiser Exhibition: Amusements: Digital Photography by Jessica Bowen

Wednesday Aug 1, 2018 Friday Aug 31, 2018

For the month of August, the Dennis P. McHugh Piermont Public Library's gallery space will feature a library fundraising exhibition entitled Amusements: Digital Photography by Jessica Bowen. An artist's reception will be held Sunday, August 5th from 2 to 4 pm. Ms. Bowen celebrated her 10th anniversary as Piermont's Library Director in June of 2018. This exhibit is a fundraiser with all proceeds benefiting the library.

Artist's statement:

Presenting my debut solo exhibition is a fitting way to mark my anniversary at the library. When I arrived in Piermont, I had just recently become interested in digital photography as a hobby. Working at the Dennis P. McHugh Piermont Public Library for the past decade has afforded me the opportunity to view a wide variety of works as the library's gallery space rotates exhibits by local artists each month. The abundance of art pieces and the support of other artists have been an inspiration.

My show, Amusements, is a celebration of summers in New Jersey and New York. Subjects include New Jersey beaches and boardwalks, amusement park rides, traveling carnivals, and fireworks. The pieces created for this show are wall panels printed on wood, some have true-to-life colors and a glossy finish. Others are printed on maple, creating a warm, sepia-like effect that is well suited to the beach and boardwalk subjects. Overall the show has a whimsical, pop art feel perfect for a summertime show.

Refreshments at the reception will fit in with the boardwalk and carnival theme as well. Saltwater taffy, bite-sized snacks, sangria and other treats will be served. All are welcome. Please join us.
