The Piermont Library board members, personnel, and friends mourn the death at age 100 of distinguished former trustee, S. Hazard Gillespie.
When, after fifteen years of service, Hazard stepped down from the Library Board in December 2008, he was 98. While on the Board, he rarely missed a meeting and contributed to all board activities with insight, humor, and enthusiasm. His most significant contribution to the library, however, was to help create and shepherd through the New York State Legislature, the bill that established the Piermont Library District and was crucial to financing the new library building.
As a nationally prominent lawyer, Hazard served as United States attorney for the Southern District of New York, argued important cases before the United States Supreme Court, and maintained his longtime association with the law firm Davis, Polk, and Wardell way into his 90s.
We were indeed fortunate to have had him as a colleague and friend.
There will be a memorial service on March 30, 2011 at St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York City.
