What is Geek the Library?

  • 'Geek the Library’ is a community-based public awareness campaign designed to highlight the vital role of public libraries and bring attention to the critical funding issues they face.
    • The awareness campaign introduces the word ‘geek’ as a verb. To ‘geek’ something is to have a passion for it and to possess a large amount of knowledge about it. Whatever you geek, the library supports you.
    • Everyone geeks something. The ‘Geek the Library’ awareness campaign would love to feature what you geek on the official Web site. Please visit www.geekthelibrary.org.
    • More and more public libraries do not have adequate funding to continue to provide the important resources your community requires. Increased community support and funding is urgently needed to ensure that the library remains strong for everyone.

When, after fifteen years of service, Hazard stepped down from the Library Board in December 2008, he was 98. While on the Board, he rarely missed a meeting and contributed to all board activities with insight, humor, and enthusiasm. His most significant contribution to the library, however, was to help create and shepherd through the New York State Legislature, the bill that established the Piermont Library District and was crucial to financing the new library building.
