Library Activity 2010–2011

  • 1,672 Piermont residents have library cards.
  • The library offered 127 programs, with an attendance of 3,878 people, up from an attendance of 3,600 last year.
  • Visits to the library totaled 23,257 people, up from 22,000 last year.
  • The library circulated 17,808 items, up from 16,998 last year.
  • Through September of this year, 17,339 people have visited the library.

The Collection

  • Total holdings are now approximately 16,000 items. New items are added monthly through purchase for the permanent collection of adult, teen, and children’s popular and award-winning titles. New adult fiction and nonfiction are also added via our book leasing program.
  • Thanks to donations from The Friends of Piermont Public Library, we have memberships to six area museums available for loan to adult cardholders in good standing.
  • The library has added three online services, also funded by The Friends: Freegal downloadable music (up to 3 songs per library card per week); Universal Class online learning (more than 540 courses available); Transparent Language online language learning using the BYKI method (more than 80 languages available)
  • The library offers Materials-by-Mail for the homebound, funded by the Library Association of Rockland County.

Programs for Children

  • Weekly Toddler Story Time
  • Monthly Music Program for toddlers and young children
  • Art class series for elementary-age children taught by Alexis Starke
  • Events funded by The Friends of the Piermont Public Library, such as the Scarecrow Contest and Valentines for Soldiers

As well as the following programs launched by our new children’s librarian, Nancy Russell:

  • Weekly Pre-school Story and Craft (for ages 3–5)
  • Monthly Pajama Time
  • Book Club for elementary students
  • Theme Parties and holiday craft sessions

Programs for Adults

  • First Friday Film Series, featuring both independent and popular films
  • Rotating art/photography exhibits by local artists in the library’s gallery space
  • Educational and cultural programs, including lectures and concerts
  • Regular meetings of three book clubs, Literacy Volunteers, the Piermont Historical Society, and other civic organizations, as well as occasional meetings of the Village Board
  • Events hosted by the Friends of the Piermont Public Library, a not-for-profit civic organization, to raise funds for the library. These include Crabfest and the Annual Wine and Food Tasting.
  • Concerts funded by grants from the Arts Council of Rockland and The Friends of the Piermont Public Library

Strategic Direction

  • To ensure the library is responsive to community interests, the Board of Trustees initiated a public survey mid-year 2009. Programs and services of the library are being developed based on input from that survey and meetings with community leaders.
  • The library is continuing to invest in and enhance children’s programs. The library’s new children’s librarian, Nancy Russell, has initiated a variety of new children’s programs. This year a new reading rug was purchased for the Children’s Room, as well as a variety of craft items.
  • Library patrons are welcome to provide input at any time and to visit the library website at www.piermontlibrary.org and on Facebook.

The Budget for 2012/2013

  • At $327, 875, the library budget is essentially unchanged from the current fiscal year.
  • The amount to be raised from Piermont taxes is $275,000, which is $250 less than last year, despite increases in a number of state-mandated charges.
  • A copy of the budget is available for review at the library.
