Posted: Thu, Nov 16, 2017

The Dennis P. McHugh Piermont Public Library
Trustee Election will be held on Wednesday, December 6th, 11 am-8pm at the library

Piermont voters will elect three trustees for the Dennis P. McHugh Piermont Public Library on Wednesday, December 6th, 2017. Voters will not have to approve the operating budget for the upcoming fiscal year since it does not exceed this year’s budget. The vote will take place at the library, and the poll will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. At present, the candidates for the three trustee positions, each of which carries a three-year term, are:

  • Marian Armstrong, who is seeking a 4th term.
  • Kelly Ruby, who is seeking a first term.
  • Ed Stanford, who is seeking a first term.

The total expenses for fiscal year 2018-2019 are budgeted at $367,000, of which the Village will fund $280,500, same as for this year. The remaining money comes from the South Orangetown Central School District and contributions. A copy of the budget is available for review at the library. Among the candidates, Armstrong is a resident of Piermont for 22 years. She has served as library board president since 2015 and has had a career in publishing at Macmillan, Simon & Schuster and Marshall Cavendish. Ruby is a coordinator for Bennett Park Community Alliance. Prior to that she worked as a botanical aid at the New York Botanical Garden. She has lived in Piermont for two years. Stanford worked for over 40 years in educational publishing, most recently as the head of the Higher Education Group at McGraw-Hill. He also served for 21 years on the South Orangetown School Board. He has lived in Piermont for 40 years.

Even though the amount of money contributed by the Village has remained steady over the past two fiscal years, collections, services, and programs have increased. The library’s holdings include new releases of adult and children’s books, movies and music as well as e-books, digital audiobooks and downloadable music.

The library also offers a wide range of programs for toddlers and older children, a monthly free film showing, monthly exhibits by local artists, book talks, game nights, local history exhibits and lectures, student art exhibitions, monthly book clubs, concerts, adult summer reading, and mah jongg.
